German Football Federation Bans Custom Number 44 on Jerseys

Controversy Over Number Symbolizing Far-Right Extremist Group

Adidas Blocks Sale of Jerseys with Controversial Symbol

Adidas has banned the sale of German football kits customized with the number 44 after a controversy erupted over the number's association with a far-right extremist group. The German Football Federation (DFB) also announced a change to the design of the number 4 on the jerseys worn by the national team.

The controversy arose because the number 44 is used as code by some far-right extremist groups to symbolize "Heil Hitler" (HH). The 4th letter of the alphabet is H, and the 44th letter is HH.

The DFB said in a statement that it "strongly condemns any form of extremism and discrimination" and that it is "taking action to prevent" the number from being used in a "negative context."
