Elephants On The Move Mapping Connections Across African Landscapes

Elephants on the Move

New Study Tracks Elephant Migration Patterns

By Lauren Quinn

A recent study from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Pretoria in South Africa has shed new light on the migration patterns of African elephants.

The study, published in the journal "Nature Ecology & Evolution," used GPS collar data from 80 collared elephants to track their movements across nearly 54,000 locations. The data showed that the elephants traveled an average of 10 kilometers per day, with some individuals traveling up to 50 kilometers per day.

The researchers found that the elephants' migration patterns were influenced by a variety of factors, including the availability of food and water, the presence of predators, and the need to find new breeding grounds. The elephants also tended to avoid areas with human activity.

The study's findings have important implications for the conservation of African elephants. By understanding the elephants' migration patterns, researchers can better protect their habitats and ensure their survival.
